The Zion girls cross country team scored another win on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at the Gothenburg Invite! Congratulations girls! Here's what Coach Torres had to say: "This is legitimately the hardest meet outside of the state meet with 505 total runners, with 101 girls in the middle school competition and from top conference and district schools. It was a difficult, hilly course on a hot day - and the girls are champions! All five placed in the top 25, with 3 in the top 15. "

Zion's pie sale has begun. Contact any Zion student to order or use https://tinyurl.com/47vt7e8c to order pies online. (Students are still able to receive credit for online orders.) We have seven different varieties of pies available: Village Pie Makers pies and Chef Pierre - Sara Lee restaurant-quality pies.

Order forms and payment are due in the office, and online orders must be placed by October 29th at 3:30 pm. More forms are available in the office.

On Wednesday, November 19th, the pies will be ready for stude nts’ families to pick up in the gym from 3:30 pm until 5:30 pm. Students will deliver the pies to their customers that night or shortly thereafter.

On September 21st, Zion Lutheran School hosted its annual golf tournament. The 2-person scramble was held at the Kearney Elks Country Golf Course. Thank you to the 15 teams that participated. Hopefully, everyone enjoyed a great day of fun and fellowship. The winners in the adult division were Matt Filbert and Sam Sickler with a 51. Second place went to Flynn and Ryan Baker with a 59. The winners in the adult/child division were Manuel Loza and Manny Portillo with a 56. Second place went to Stuart Guthrie and Madi Vetter with a 58. Thank you to Chelsea Junge, Bailey Hockemeier, and Adam Herrera for organizing the tournament. Proceeds go toward any necessary supplies or maintenance for the school not covered by the budget.

Congratulations to the Zion Lutheran Kearney girl’s XC team on winning the Kearney MS Invitational, held Friday, September 12. According to Coach Torres: our team is small but mighty! All five runners finished in the top 14, four in the top 8! This was the girls' second consecutive meet win!

Max Barone in his first XC meet ever placed 30th with a time of 13:52.29, running half of the race with one shoe :).

On Wednesday, September 17 the whole school attended an assembly on Emergency situations. Officer Schwarz started the assembly by introducing us to his Police K9, Kuba. We learned how Kuba and Officer Schwarz work together to keep our community safe. Next, Mrs. Marquardt taught us what action steps students can take in case of an emergency such as fire, tornado, an intruder or a dog on the playground. Our school has worked diligently to learn these protocols and visuals that are used in every school in our community.
Thank you to the Kearney Police Department for their dedication to keeping our schools safe and informed.

The new turf project is done! Its time to celebrate - the Zion Board of Ed will be hosting their annual Back-to-School BBQ on the evening of Sept. 25 from 5-7 p.m. We will have hamburgers & hotdogs and a bounce house! Join us!

We are excited to welcome all our K-8 students for our first day of school tomorrow. To celebrate the first day of school, Tropical Sno will be at the Zion parking lot from 11:15-12:30 on Wednesday the 13th. One size available for $5. Cash only.

We are a week away from the first day of school! Due to field turf installation, there will be no back-to-school night. We will have a special night to celebrate once it has been installed. The school will be open from 9-4 next Tuesday. Families are welcome to bring in children to tour and drop off school supplies if desired. It'll be strange to start without the usual festivities, but it'll be worth the wait!
