Halloween celebrations can be viewed as a harmless time of fun, games, costumes, and lots of food. But the celebrations can become problematic when we look at the origins of the holiday and the meaning behind many of the practices that are related to the day. Spooks, ghosts, vampires, witches, etc. are not Christian in nature, and are usually associated with evil creatures.
Yes, it’s possible to have harmless fun, games, and food with other Christians at this time. However, others may view these activities as anti-Christian. Therefore, in order to avoid confusion, we will continue in our practice of not celebrating Halloween at Zion Lutheran School. We are not putting down those who wish to have fun, games, and distribute or receive candy at this time. We are choosing not to celebrate this day at school.
Paul in 1 Corinthians 8, wrote about the eating of meat sacrificed to idols as being harmless in itself “but not everyone knows this” (v.7) and consequently Paul urged Christians to avoid such eating if it would cause offense to another Christian. We do not wish to cause offense to our brothers and sisters in Christ. We appreciate your understanding regarding this issue.
