Primary Level Education

At Zion Lutheran School we offer a strong primary level education for families interested in excellent, Christ-centered education.

Primary School

Schedule:  The primary school classes of grades 1-6 operate on the same full-time schedule as the 7th and 8th grades.  Class meets daily Monday through Friday from 8:15 am to 3:30 pm.

Class size: Zion offers the following elementary classes: due significant growth in our lower grades, we have split the combined third and fourth grade class: 4th is now combined with 5th grade and sixth is single for three quarters of the day, joining the 7th/8th for p.e., art, and science.  All classes will be capped at max of 24, whether separate or combined.  Not sure about how a combined grade class works – keep reading!

Student/teacher ratio: 12-17:1  Each primary level class has a main homeroom teacher, though p.e. is taught by UNK student teachers and music is taught by our music teacher.  The first and second grade classrooms have been split into two classes.  Due to sustained growth, we will be splitting the combined 3rd/4th grade class into two classes for the 2017-2018 school year.  Grades  5/6 are taught in a combined grade classroom.

Benefits of the combined classroom:  There are many reasons that a combined classroom can provide a superior education for your child:

  • Students will have the same teacher for two years; in this time students and teachers develop a strong relationship that facilitates learning.  Teachers gain an intimate knowledge of each student’s strengths and weaknesses and can tailor lessons to meet the child’s needs.
  • Students thrive academically.  In a combination classroom, some subjects are taught whole class on a two year cycle and other classes are taught separately by grade or level of achievement.
  • Students in the higher of the two classes often develop leadership skills and serve as models and mentors to their younger classmates. This is how we maintain such a positive and well-behaved student body.  The older students model to the younger each year.

Cost: $4,430 a year.  Don’t let this number scare you, we offer scholarships and tuition assistance to those who would like to send their child to Zion but are unable to afford it.  We never want finances to be a deterrent to a family wanting to send their child to Zion.

Teachers:  We are pleased to have the following teachers and their respective classes:  -Miss Debra Erickson will teach 1st grade for the 2018-2019 school year.  Miss Erickson is currently wrapping up her Master’s work in library science and will not be back for the 2019-2020 year.  Mrs. Christina Long is teaching a 2nd/3rd grade combination, , Mr. Vogel teaches a large 4th grade class, and  Mrs. Willers is the homeroom teacher of the 5th and 6th grade class.   (see faculty page for more information)
