2016-2017 Early Childhood Handbook

At Zion Lutheran School we offer a number of early childhood education opportunities for families interested in excellent, Christ-centered education.

3 Year Old Preschool: Tuesday & Thursday

Schedule:  This class meets every Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:15 am to 11:15 am.

Class size: Each 3 yr. old section is capped at a maximum of 12 students.

Student/teacher ratio: 7.5:1  Each preschool class has a teacher and an aide.

Sections:  Zion is currently offering two sections of preschool.  Last year we filled these sections very quickly, so do not delay if you want a spot.  If the classes reach their maximum, we will start a waiting list.

Cost: $1020 per year ($102.00 per month for 10 months)

Teachers: Mrs. Nancy Halva will teach this preschool class. Mrs. Halva will have an aide at all times. (See faculty page for more information about our faculty.)

Special notes: To be eligible for this class, students must be 3 years old by July 31, and toilet-trained.  For our early childhood classes we are somewhat flexible on birthdates.  It must be understood, however, that the state of Nebraska has just passed into law the requirement that all children must be of age by July 31.  If your child comes of age to enter kindergarten between the dates of Aug. 1st and Oct. 15th, you, the parents, can request that this requirement be waived.  The requirement can and will be waived if you meet one of three criteria set forth by the state.  For more information on this, please see the principal.

4/5 Year Old Prekindergarten

Schedule:  This class meets every day, Monday thru Friday, mornings from 8:15 am to 11:15 am.  Morning students do have the option of staying for lunch; for these students, dismissal is at 11:45am.   Due to high demand we have opened an all-week afternoon section! The afternoon section will meet Monday thru Friday 12:150-3:15 p.m.

Class size: Each 4 yr. old section is capped at a maximum of 15 students.

Student/teacher ratio: 7.5:1  Each prekindergarten class has a teacher and an aide.

Sections:  Zion currently offers three sections of all-week prekindergarten: two morning sessions and one afternoon session.

Cost: $1825 per year ($182.50 per month for 10 months) for the morning section and $1725 per year ($172.50 per month) for the afternoon.

Teachers:  Mrs. Carol DeLoach and Mrs. Kucera will each teach a morning section of this class with their respective aides.  Mrs. Halva will teach the afternoon class.

Special notes: All prekindergarten students must be at least four years old by July 31 in order to enter kindergarten for the following school year (2018-2019).  We are somewhat flexible with birthdates in our early childhood programs.

Five year olds are admitted as well, since kindergarten readiness varies from child to child.  There is no shame in this – research shows that it is far better for a child to wait a year than to start before they are ready!

Kindergarten

Schedule:  This class meets every day from 8:15 am to 3:30 pm.

Class size: We are projecting that our kindergarten will have approximately 14-16 students for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Student/teacher ratio: 22:1

Cost: $3550 per year ($355.00 per month for 10 months)  Tuition assistance, scholarships, and other discounts are available for kindergarteners.  To learn more about these, please visit the enrollment page or speak to the school secretary or the head teacher.

Teacher:  Miss Amy Woodman.

Special notes:  State law requires that all kindergarteners provide a copy of a valid birth certificate and documentation of immunization.  If you need helping obtaining these forms, we would be happy to help.  Students must be 5 yrs. old by July 31.  If your child comes of age to enter kindergarten between the dates of Aug. 1st and Oct. 15th, you, the parents, can request that this requirement be waived.  The requirement can and will be waived if you meet one of three criteria set forth by the state.  For more information on this, please see the principal.  Anecdotally, we find that the vast majority of children benefit from waiting a year as opposed to being pushed ahead early.
